Bio

Dr. Slater has a practice focus in perioperative services and medical surgical nursing that spans 20 years. She holds a specialty certification in operating room nursing (CNOR). Dr. Slater has taught in both academia and clinical practice for over 9 years. She instructs nursing students in the high fidelity simulation lab and clinical practice rotations as well as a flip classroom environment that employs case study and clinical reasoning activities, communication, and relation based nursing care with diverse patient populations. Currently, Dr. Slater is teaching in the RN to BSN program and undergraduate nursing programs at University of Akron. She is also completing a post-doctoral fellowship in healthcare quality science and patient safety at the Louis Stokes Veteran Affairs Center in Cleveland as a nurse quality scholar.

Dr. Slater’s research interests include: perioperative nursing, medical surgical nursing, clinical nurse leadership, quality, patient safety, healthcare delivery systems, health policy, evidence based practice, and health-care disparities. Dr. Slater is involved with the Center for Health Affairs NEONI initiative and the QSEN program. She is a member of the Association of Operating Room Nurses, American Nurses Association, Ohio Nurses Association: Cleveland Chapter (Director at Large), the National League for Nursing, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, Lorain County Drug and Addiction Services (Board Member), Sigma Theta Tau, and the American Association of University Professors.
